What are some alternatives to vertical blinds for sliding glass doors?

Question by woohoooooo!!!!: What are some alternatives to vertical blinds for sliding glass doors?
I don’t especially want vertical blinds if I don’t have to. Are there any other good ideas for sliding glass doors?

Good question. Our new house has a sliding glass door and vertical blinds. My mom even gave me a new set of vertical blinds. But my SIL told me it looks like a motel room LOL. The only feasible alternatives I’ve come up with is a) reflective film (so no one can see in, eliminating the need for any window covering) or b) treating the sliding doors as a really big window. I like b better. You can just buy drapes, valances, etc whatever you would buy for a window. You might have to custom order or make it yourself due to the size though.

Q&A: need some suggestions for window treatments in nursery?

Question by julie: need some suggestions for window treatments in nursery?
What do I do about privacy? I kind of wanted to try to get some panels and a shade, just so it looks finished, but will that be to much? Also what color panels would you recommend? I was thinking pink?

Let me contribute the cheap answer, (you need to save those pennies!) If you buy a basic white, plastic roller shade, they are very easy to paint, stencil or stamp. The design on your bedding is quite simple, and you could find a similarly shaped flower stamp at any craft store. You could either cover the shade with alternating pink flowers, or do a row at the bottom. It wouldn’t overwhelm the room with pink, would be very cute with the valance, and if it got broken, it would be no big deal to replace. (I’m talking about the shades that attach inside the window frame, and have no cords.)

Hope all goes well with your little one’s arrival.

I’d like some opinions on window treatments for my patiodoor?

Question by mojo: I’d like some opinions on window treatments for my patiodoor.?
It’s a 9 ft. long sliding door to my back patio. Since we installed a doggie door (specially made for patio doors) my house seems colder. The window treatment I have now is not helping keep out drafts but I like the look, they’re vertical blinds. My husband is telling me we need heavy drapes. We use the patio door a lot & I don’t think drapes would look right. I also don’t like the fact that the heavy drapes would block out the sunshine too much also & they look formal. Anyway, I’d like some opinions……thanks

A solid fabric material will provide the best insulation.
They don’t have to be velvet-type heavy to provide
insulating properties.

Some of the synthetic materials can provide draft
protection and still be lightweight.

If you use multiple panels, it is easier to work with,
and clean, especially with a pet brushing up against
them. There are solid, synthetic curtains or panels
that do not look like shower curtains.

You can also use a sheer behind the curtains to allow
light in, block drafts, and provide a little insulation when
you open the curtains to allow light in.

A light color that is treated against stains and water
would reflect light from the room, to avoid the
claustrophobia.

In January a lot of department stores have nice sales on linens and drapery, but a simple solution would be to use sheets they can be found fairly cheap you need to get top sheets. I use sheets for drapes in two bedrooms, and they look nice. Might take four sheets per window with your wide windows if you cannot sew you can glue them together.

What are some good kitchen window treatment ideas?

I am very fond of the 2 inch faux wood blinds. They can cut them to fit your window at no extra charge. What I like most about them is they are very easy to clean. I put them in the bathtub with some Oxyclean and hot water and even the draw cords are like new. They give you total control of the light. Then you can add a valance over the top to make them more decorative if you want.

In most kitchens the windows are treated with fairly frilly curtains. I used a tailored valance in my latest kitchen just to be a little bit different, and it has a gathered lining (custom made) http://jansseninteriors.blogspot.com/ (the very first photo)

The most important thing to keep in mind for kitchen curtains is that they get dirty, and should be machine washable if you want them to last. Most are not very expensive.

Some Ideas of Sheer Window Treatment

Sheer can be a good alternative for window treatment since it can add a decorative element to your window. Sheer is commonly made of fabric. It will be the right window treatment option for those who need more light in the room. Yet, it does not fit for those who need absolute privacy. Wanting to make sheer window treatment, you can simply use sheer fabric and simple curtain rod.

Firstly, you have to measure the width and the length of the window to determine the size of fabric you will need. For the draping, you can add the measurement for width and length and then multiply it three times. Sheer window draping needs more fabric than conservative panels. It needs a curtain rod. If you don’t have any, you have to buy one for it. The rod should be able to complement the design and look of your home. If you have already had window treatment, you can drape the fabric at the end of the existing rod.

Instead, you can purchase new rod for the draping.

Furthermore, before hanging the window fabric, you have to make sure that it is free from wrinkles. If any, you can iron it. Then, you can hang it. There are two techniques which are suitable for window draping. The first technique is using the draping fabric which is wrapped twice around the curtain rod. Make sure that the fabric draping down has equal length with the window. This method is known as the symmetrical method. It is the most popular fabric draping method today.

In the second technique, the draping fabric is commonly bunched at each corner of the curtain rod with clear wire, hair tie, and a rubber band. The middle of draping bows with side panel which can be unequal and equal length. Compared to the first method, this is more creative and can bring more visual interest to the room.

Instead of sheer, you can also consider aluminum mini blinds. Door window blinds are considered as the most popular window treatment today. Whether you are looking for privacy, window treatment will be ideal for you.

Q&A: I am having a hard time finding some window treatments?

Question by LuvLife: I am having a hard time finding some window treatments?
I am looking for WHITE (not antiqued, or ivory) curtain rods for panel curtains. I need a 4 Ft and a 8Ft. I am having so much trouble, if you can please point me in the right direction. Looking for something that won’t break the bank!

Also any ideas for a window in a bathroom. I was thinking of a roman shade, can you use blinds with these or no

Best answer:

Answer by XinaMarie
I had the same problem finding rods and ended up making my own. I needed something sturdy to hold the weight and looks like you are in the same situation. At 8′ you can buy a rod at the local home improvement center and cut it to size then paint it. The finials can be attached at the ends, also purchased there. Then arms can be purchased and painted to hold the rods. Total cost is about $ 20

Windows in a bathroom can be a pain. Buy a privacy film and install it on the glass that way you can keep the light during the day….at night, a roller blind can be pulled down so as not to give the neighbors a shadow show.
