What type of french door window treatment would look good in a room that has white window shutters?

Question by Curious Me: What type of french door window treatment would look good in a room that has white window shutters?
My family room has white window shutters. My dilemma is what type of window treatment to install for my french doors which are in the same room. I don’t want to use something that will clash with the white shutters.

Why would you want to put “window treatments” (curtains?) on a French door? The purpose of a French door is to let light pass through so I don’t understand why you would want to block that or clutter up the door with useless “decor.”. If you absolutely need something over the glass for privacy, the only thing I’ve ever seen that looked decent on French doors is top and bottom rod-shirred sheer or lace in ivory or white. Since your shutters are white, use white.

How much fabric do you think I would need to make these curtains? ?

Question by Sky: How much fabric do you think I would need to make these curtains? ?
II’m making curtains for a window about 30 inches wide and 27 inches long, but they want me to make the curtain to drape over the air conditioning unit that is inside the window. How much extra in length, and how much overall do you think i’d need?

You didn’t say how far the a/c juts out or how big it is, but all you need to do is to take a simple measurement. Just take a measuring tape, start from where the curtains will start, then drape the tape over and below the unit to where you want the curtains to lie.

You’ll want to make the two curtain panels the same length, so that when the curtains are open they will still look nice. A rough estimate, if this is a small window unit, will be that you will need an additional yard in length. If the fabric you are using is 60 inches wide, you will need two panels that are both four yards long – a total of eight yards of fabric.

This measurement is for a window treatment that has a top and bottom hem that has a total of about eight inches. Depending on what type of curtains you are making, you will have a little too much fabric, but you won’t waste much.

If you are using fabric that is only 45 inches wide you can still make the curtains using the same amount of fabric but you won’t have enough to make pleats and use hooks. If you are planning on pleating the fabric, you’ll need to add a couple more panels.

I hope this helps! Remember, measure twice and cut once!

Q&A: What window treatment situation would you suggest on two close windows?

Question by Stephanie Roynestad: What window treatment situation would you suggest on two close windows?
I have three “standard” windows in my living room. I haven’t measured them, I can’t find my tape measure, but they are probably 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Two of them are close together (with maybe an inch or two between) and the other one is by itself, all on the same wall. What would you suggest I do about curtain panels and rods? I don’t know if there’s enough room on the two windows that are close to use two rods. Would it look funny with one LONG rod? If I did one long rod, should I use just two panels, one for each window, or four panels, two for each window? I was planning on doing two panels on the one window by itself. I am really not good at style and decor! We’ve had nothing but $ 2.99 blinds on our windows for 3 years!

One long rod on the two windows would look fine. The closer you put the rod to the ceiling will make the window look larger. Myself, I would probably use sheers because I am not a fan of drapery. I would fill the rod with a bunch of coordinating color sheers. Use whatever colors match your decor and hang them alternating, antique white and beige, for example. Or pick two colors that are opposites from your decor like purple and white.
If you need privacy at the window, hang bamboo blinds.

This pic shows what I mean by hanging the colors alternating only i would do this all the way across the rod.

Q&A: I just got a terrarium window and would like advice on window treatments I could get for it.?

For privacy at night you may use a blind or a room dividing screen.
Before you decide and spend, meditate on the hole…Can a blind be attached without ruining the plants when you close it? Can a valance be secured to the outside frame and give a place to hide drapery rods?

How to hang window blinds on a wall made out of brick or other type of window treatment that would work?

Question by jrunaas: How to hang window blinds on a wall made out of brick or other type of window treatment that would work?
We live in San Diego and the room in question gets a lot of morning sun. The room was a patio that someone enclosed with the far wall being all brick (fireplace). Where normally you would have drywall to screw in the brackets for blinds, you have a metal plate at the top of the window which the brick sits on. The rest of the house has wood blinds, but I’m up for anything – I just don’t know how to secure it. Any suggestions? Thanks

If allowable in your home, might try Liquid Nail. Can buy easily at Home Depot or Lowe’s, Its very strong, but you may have to hold the piece for a few minutes to let it set.

Without drilling into your brick this is the only option I can think of.

You could also try putting in a “roman shade” I believe they call it? These are available almost everywhere including Wal-Mart. It may not look like something you’d like but it would provide shade for you.

Best of luck!

What type of window treatments would you recommend?

Question by twinmom: What type of window treatments would you recommend?
for the back windows of the first floor of my house? I have a long line of windows that extends from the dining room, which is a bay window, to the kitchen, and then to the family room. It’s an open floor plan so you can see the windows from one room to the next, and the windows treatments need to work together. The house faces west so the morning sun shines directly into these windows, so I need something that blocks or filters light, yet, my young children play on the deck outside the kitchen so I can’t obstruct the view. I am worried regular blinds will block the view from the kitchen too much. I need suggestions for blinds, shades or drapes. We have priced out plantation shutters and I’m not sure about them because of the cost and they may partially obstruct the view.

Wood blinds or faux wood blinds. Then hang narrow drapes from the top of the window molding to the floor, only in the areas between the blinds, to give it a decorative touch without obstructing the view. Go with a color and design for the drapes that will give you good flow between the three rooms.
Tilt the blinds in each room as needed for light or sun control. If you don’t close the blinds completely, but only part way, you should still be able to see outside to see the kids.

What would be the cost of getting custom window treatments done?

Question by Nemo: What would be the cost of getting custom window treatments done?
I have a window (or set of windows) in my family room that takes up a whole wall. I don’t have the exact measurements, but it’s close to 84″ high and 108″ long. I want to get curtain/drapes/window treatments (whatever they are called) made. I know that a major cost factor will be type of fabric that I select plus hardware, but can someone give me a price range so I can start budgeting? Just to make it easy, let say I select a fabric that is $ 20 per yard.

Answer by aout
The best thing for you to do would be to:
#1 get the exact measurements for your window.
#2 pick a company/designer that makes custom window treatments

They will then be able to help you pick what’s best. They can price it out and you can contact them once you have the money.
