Consider the style, size, and shape of the window, and what you want the curtains for. Think about the room, its proportions and what it’s used for, the upholstery, and accessories. Curtains can be hung from rods in a number of ways.

Although most are functional rather than stylish, some decorative types are available. The right choice will not only enhance the window but also turn an ordinary room into a really special place.

Here are ten household helpful hints for choosing curtains:

1. Match curtain fabric with upholstery to unify space that seems untidy.

2. Use carpet to mark off space. A rug is ideal for establishing a social zone within a room.

3. Fabrics with classic patterns give a period feeling to the ambience of a room.

4. Remember that the bed linen, tablecloths, and towels also contribute to decoration.

5. Sheer curtain and gauze enable us to filter light.

6. Venetian blinds allow control over the amount of light entering a room.

7. Do not limit curtains and blinds to just windows. They can be used in an excessively long passage or hallway. Blinds make good screens.

8. In rooms with a lot of pictures, different colored walls, or furniture, it is suitable to use neutral tones for the curtains and upholstery.

9. Take advance of fabrics by using them to renovate your furniture.

10. Use rugs and tapestries as hanging on a wall. Their color and texture are unbeatable and they improve acoustics.

What is a cheap, easy window treatment for a rounded window?

Question by EB7: What is a cheap, easy window treatment for a rounded window?
I have a regular square window that has a half circle window on top of it. Any suggestions for a window treatmment for the rounded window?

Best answer:

Answer by starlight_940
Maybe just try a valance that covers the bottom half of the square window. It sounds like a pretty window. I wouldn’t want to take away from the already nice look of it by piling a bunch of material onto it.

What kind of window treatment won’t my dogs destroy?

Question by aavery29@sbcglobal.net: What kind of window treatment won’t my dogs destroy?
We have curtains on our picture window and the dogs are constantly wrestling, getting wrapped up in them and tearing them down. We’ve had vertical blinds before and they stick their noses through them and mess them up too. I imagine mini blinds they’d do the same thing to. Should we just board up the window, or does someone have a suggestion?

Best answer:

Answer by Karen L
Cast iron shutters, maybe. There is no conventional window treatment that a dog can’t wreck. Mini-blinds could be damaged with one good swipe of a paw. If you can’t train the dogs or crate them so they stay out of the window area when you’re not around, then leave the window uncovered unless you are right there to prevent them from messing with them

Q&A: Large window treatments?

Question by reconnermom: Large window treatments?
I am moving into a new house and would like some suggestions on how I can dress some very large and odd size windows in the Florida room. I would prefer shades of some type instead of curtains. If shades are not possible I would prefer curtains over blinds. I would love to have some bamboo shades but cannot think of a cost effective way to get them right now. I’d have to order custom. I have a budget of around $ 150. Even if I make or find curtain panels work to the right size, I do not think I could get one big long curtain rod so I wouldn’t have to have gaps between the panels. How would I make it consistent?I would also like to have something that looks at least decent and not just like it was thrown up there. The window sizes are as follows:
window 1 is 13′ W (156″) x 5′ H (60″)
window 2 is 113″ W x 62″ H

You might consider some version of a ‘Roman’ shade. Check out this link for a few good ideas – http://terrelldesigns.com/howtomakeromanshades.htm

As to a curtain rod long enough, you can always head to your local hardware, or building supply store. You can use copper, or some other pipe. With a large window like that, you could easily use an ‘oversized’ pipe diameter, and it would still look good over the window. Shorter lengths of pipe can be joined by using coupling sleeves, or inserts, to make longer sections.

Valances are a nice way to trim off the top of a window. You can make them yourself, with a few simple tools, and they can be very complex, or simple in design.

Here are some other links to check out –
Images search for ‘roman blind’ – http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0geu._hjrpIXSgA3GBXNyoA?ei=UTF-8&p=roman%20blind&fr2=tab-web&fr=slv8-msgr
Curtain rods – quite a few selections in wood, and they’ve got a coupler, to join lengths to make them longer – http://www.countrycurtains.com/sdx/H24728.jsp

Vertical blinds are always an option too, though, to get them the size you need, you’d almost have to go with a custom supplier.

Now… if you’d like something VERY strong, and easy to assemble, then I’d suggest steel pipe, with threaded fittings. You can purchase base flanges to screw to the wall (be sure to locate the studs), you can use short lengths (right off the hardware shelf) to create the distance you need from the wall itself, and even T-fittings in the middle to add more support, and allow you to use shorter lengths of pipe. For a 13ft wide window, I’d use at least one center support, perhaps two. Once the pipe has all been assembled, you can even paint it. Either leave it exposed, or put a valance over it.

Speaking of valances – Ive made quite a few commercially, using 1/4 inch hardboard, up to 1/2″ plywood. They can be straight, shaped, padded, etc. The cloth can usually just be stapled to the backside.

Have Fun

I am looking for window blinds (or other window covering) that pull up from the bottom of the window.?

Question by topsider: I am looking for window blinds (or other window covering) that pull up from the bottom of the window.?
Or are there blinds that close by pulling up or down?

Best answer:

Answer by Chiara
There are many blinds that close buy pulling down. Blinds that close by pulling up would be rather inconvenient unless the top of your windows were within arm’s reach.

Can you help me find a window treatment?

Question by Gypsy Girl: Can you help me find a window treatment?
I’m looking for something that will let plenty of light in my room, allow me to see out, prevent people from seeing in, and block drafts from the window. Is there something available that can do all that?

Best answer:

Answer by think_global
I know a lot of people do not like blinds but they are really the only things that can do all that. These days, you can get blinds made out of a lot of different materials, including wood etc. There are stores that sell only blinds for the best selection. Check the web. Here is one link below. Good Luck!

How much fabric do you think I would need to make these curtains? ?

Question by Sky: How much fabric do you think I would need to make these curtains? ?
II’m making curtains for a window about 30 inches wide and 27 inches long, but they want me to make the curtain to drape over the air conditioning unit that is inside the window. How much extra in length, and how much overall do you think i’d need?

Best answer:

Answer by imadriana
You didn’t say how far the a/c juts out or how big it is, but all you need to do is to take a simple measurement. Just take a measuring tape, start from where the curtains will start, then drape the tape over and below the unit to where you want the curtains to lie.

You’ll want to make the two curtain panels the same length, so that when the curtains are open they will still look nice. A rough estimate, if this is a small window unit, will be that you will need an additional yard in length. If the fabric you are using is 60 inches wide, you will need two panels that are both four yards long – a total of eight yards of fabric.

This measurement is for a window treatment that has a top and bottom hem that has a total of about eight inches. Depending on what type of curtains you are making, you will have a little too much fabric, but you won’t waste much.

If you are using fabric that is only 45 inches wide you can still make the curtains using the same amount of fabric but you won’t have enough to make pleats and use hooks. If you are planning on pleating the fabric, you’ll need to add a couple more panels.

I hope this helps! Remember, measure twice and cut once!

Q&A: What is a great window treatment for a window with a hemisphere top?

Question by jessiebellduncan: What is a great window treatment for a window with a hemisphere top?
I have a window that is a regular size, but the top is shaped like a hlf circle. I have no idea what to do to cover it. Any ideas?

Answer by metallichick31
I have the same problem. I’m leaning towards a swag hanging loosely to either side from the center. I have a roman shade which hangs from the bottom of the half-circle (rectangular part). I like the look of verticals best, but the swag is still the best way to go as the treatment for the top, regardless of what you decide for the rectangle.

Can you put a window treatment on a metal door?

Question by Angelique: Can you put a window treatment on a metal door?
My front door is steel with an oval window in it. I want to put a roman shade on it because the late afternoon sun comes in and causes a glare on the TV. My hubby says you can’t put a curtain on a metal door. I’d like to prove him wrong.

They make curtain rods that are magnetic. If you can find one that will hold the kind of window covering you want, you will win!

You can drill and mount any kind of shade you want, but it will have to be permanent. The holes will always be there.

What window treatment should I use for a large window?

Question by John: What window treatment should I use for a large window?
Hello. The apartment I moved into has a large window that is approximately 130 inches by 53 inches (LxW). I need something basic that will block out a lot of light. What economical options do you recommend?
Correction: The width is 130 inches and the height is 53 inches. Thanks!

Hello, I bought some drapes from a second hand store and sewing them all together. I added a second fabric at the bottom for length because they were too short but they are beautiful and they work. You could buy inexpensive drapes and do the same thing. Good luck.
